The longtime owners of this property in Old Greenwich, CT wanted to make a big change to their existing landscape. Existing shrubs were totally hiding their lovely front porch, plants were large, overgrown and out of scale. They wanted to create a new vision for a more attractive landscape that was compatible with their house and their design aesthetics. A simple landscape planting design was created to address their concerns. BWLA designed new low maintenance foundation plantings surrounding this charming house which are mostly dwarf, that will not overwhelm the beautiful front porch and other areas surrounding the house. Flowering shrubs, small evergreen shrubs, perennials, bulbs, annuals and groundcovers provide seasonal interest spring thru fall. Some unique or interesting plants like spring flowering Blue Star or summer flowering St. Johnswort, were used and interspersed along with some typical New England plantings to create some drama, as was requested by the owner. A new small patio space was created outside the rear door, adjacent to the new generator. This will be a place to have a sit quietly, read, enjoy the summer afternoons surrounded by lots of flowering perennials, bulbs and roses. At the back of the patio is a new cedar lattice fencing with vines that will gradually cover the fence and provide screening for the nearby generator. A new steppingstone paths lead from the back door down to the bluestone steps and connects to the garage. At the other side of the house, along the edge of the existing driveway, is a long thin planting bed with mostly shade perennials like Fairy Candles, Bleeding Heart and Turf Lily with some colorful groundcover, Spotted Dead Nettle. To provide access to the hose bib and irrigation system, steppingstones were placed thru the new planting bed. New landscape lighting was added to allow for nighttime access thru the back yard, small discrete wall lights were placed under the existing bluestone coping. The historic brick front walk was reset to create a safe level path to the front door
